WATERING Newly-seeded lawns need to be kept damp. When there is little or no rainfall, water your lawn twice a week during the early morning. Apply 1 inch of water per week, or 1/2 inch per watering. A brown discoloration can mean a lack of water. To test, push a pencil into your soil. If moist, it will penetrate easily, if hard, the soil needs more water. Core aerate if water runs off soil surface.

MOWING Sharpen mower blades. Remove winter damage by mowing lawn no higher than 1-1/2 inches. Maintain mowing height between 1-1/2 and 2 inches for the best color. Mow frequently enough so that no more than 1/3 of the leaf blade is removed each time. Mow more frequently with mulch mowers. Lower mowing height back to 1 to 1-1/2 inches. Mow lawn, then apply winter fertilizer.
SEEDING Seed new lawns. Overseed thin, damaged spots. Use a shade supplement in heavily shaded areas. See watering. Summer seeding is very successful with careful and adequate watering. Seed new lawns. Overseed drought-damaged areas. See watering.
